Microblading, Powder Brows or Nanobrows: Which Is Right for You?

By Meaghan WhiteMicrobladingNovember 5, 20267 min read

Healed brow tattooing on a Harlowe Beauty Studio client in Fernandina Beach

If you are choosing brows in Fernandina Beach, the short answer is this: microblading suits a soft, natural hair stroke look, powder or ombre brows suit a fuller, filled in look and are often the better choice for oily or sensitive skin, and nanobrows give the finest, most realistic strokes and tend to last longer on oily skin. At Harlowe Beauty Studio on Amelia Island, Meaghan White does all of them, and every brow appointment starts with a free 30 minute consultation so you do not have to decide alone.

At a glance

  • Microblading: $375, natural hair strokes
  • Powder, ombre or combination: $400 each
  • 3D nanobrows: $425, best for oily skin
  • Included: shaping and color consult, six week perfecting session
  • Where: 911 South 8th Street, Suite D, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034, on Amelia Island
  • Hours: by appointment, Thursday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm
  • First step: a free 30-minute consultation for any service
  • Book: online or call or text 904-506-1515

Below we walk through how each technique works, who it tends to suit, what it costs on our brow tattooing menu, and what healing looks like, so you can come in with a clear idea of what you want.

The three main approaches

Every brow we tattoo falls into one of three families: hair strokes made by hand (microblading), shading made with a machine (powder and ombre brows), and ultra fine machine strokes (nanobrows). Combination brows mix strokes and shading. They all place pigment in the skin to shape and fill the brow, and they all fade gradually over time. The difference is the tool, the texture of the finished brow, and how each one behaves on different skin.

Microblading

Microblading uses a handheld tool with tiny needles to draw hair like strokes that mimic your natural brow hairs. The result is fuller, more defined brows that still read as hair. It is a good fit if you have thin or sparse brows and want them to look natural up close, not filled in with makeup.

Microblading is $375 at our studio. That includes the shaping and color consult and your six week perfecting session.

Powder brows and ombre brows

Powder and ombre brows are styles of microshading. Instead of strokes, a machine places tiny dots of pigment in the brow using a stippling technique. Powder brows have a soft, pixelated look all the way through, a lot like brows filled in with powder. Ombre brows go from light to dark: the front of the brow is lighter and the tail is darker, for a very defined finish.

Microshading is often recommended for oily or sensitive skin, and for anyone who wants a filled in look. Powder brows and ombre brows are each $400, including the shaping and color consult and the six week perfecting session.

Combination brows

Combination brows pair hair strokes with shading. You get the texture of strokes with a little more definition than strokes alone. If you like the idea of microblading but usually wear some brow powder too, this is often the middle ground. Combination brows are $400, with the consult and perfecting session included.

3D nanobrows

Nanobrows are similar to microblading, but the strokes are made with ultra fine single needles on a machine, which is where the name comes from. The strokes are very precise and natural, and we add shading in target areas to give the brow a 3D effect. Nano strokes last longer than microbladed strokes and are a better option if you have oily skin. Nanobrows are also often recommended for sensitive or mature skin, since the technique is less invasive and can cause less trauma to the skin.

3D nanobrows are $425, including the consult and perfecting session.

Which one fits your skin and your look

There is no single best brow. The right choice depends on your skin, the look you want, and how much brow makeup you wear today. Here is how we usually think about it during a consultation:

  • You want soft, natural hair strokes and do not have oily skin: microblading is a strong fit.
  • You have oily or sensitive skin and want a filled in, made up finish: powder or ombre brows.
  • You want a crisp, defined brow that is lighter at the front and darker at the tail: ombre brows.
  • You want strokes but with more definition: combination brows.
  • You want hair strokes but have oily skin, or you have sensitive or mature skin: nanobrows.

If you are unsure, that is exactly what the free consultation is for. We look at your skin and natural brow, talk through your goals, and walk you through color and shape options before you book anything.

What happens at your appointment

Each brow appointment is personal. We start by mapping out the brow with you and decide together on width, arch and style. We do not start tattooing until you give the go ahead. Then we apply a strong numbing cream so you stay comfortable, and most people fall asleep during the procedure.

The whole appointment takes about 3 hours. You go home with an aftercare kit and written instructions, and you come back for your perfecting visit, which is included at no charge within six weeks of your first appointment.

How long each one lasts

Microblading, microshading and nanobrows all last anywhere from 1 to 3 years, depending on your skin type, lifestyle and aftercare. On oily skin, nano strokes tend to hold longer than microbladed strokes, which is one reason we often suggest nanobrows or powder brows for oily skin.

All brow tattooing needs touch ups over time. If you are a returning client outside the six week perfecting window, a touch up is $200 for one visit.

Healing, stage by stage

Right after your appointment, your brows will look almost perfect, and then they will change. Knowing the stages ahead of time saves a lot of worry:

  1. Your brows look noticeably darker than you expect.
  2. They scab and itch.
  3. They seem to almost disappear for a while. We call this the ghosting stage.
  4. They settle and heal to between 50 and 70 percent of their original depth.

This is normal for every technique, and it is why the perfecting session matters. We trust the process and so should you.

Aftercare that protects your results

How well you care for your brows is directly related to your final result. The basics from our brow FAQ page:

  • Blot the area with a tissue as needed for the first 24 hours to remove lymph.
  • Keep the area dry for the first 5 days, and wash your face while avoiding the brows.
  • Apply aftercare ointment 3 times a day for 5 days.
  • Do not pick or scratch, and do not pull off scabs.
  • Skip saunas, swimming, heavy exercise and anything that makes you sweat a lot for 5 days.

Already have brows that turned a strange color?

Older brow tattoos can shift to blue, gray, red or even green over time. That does not mean anyone did anything wrong. We have corrected many brows like this, usually over 2 to 3 visits, first neutralizing the color and then reshaping. When the old pigment is too saturated, saline tattoo removal is an option at $99 per session, and 1 to 3 sessions are normally needed.

Booking your brows on Amelia Island
